Austin Wildlife Education: Signs of a raccoon in the house

Raccoons are known as pest animals. This means that even though they might appear adorable and innocent on the surface they can wreak havoc in your home. During spring many animals will take advantage of the welcoming heat offered by your home. They are looking for a place to nest. If you suspect that you might have an unwelcome visitor, you might want to make sure what it is before taking steps to get rid of it.

Signs that you have a house guest
· The first clue that a raccoon may have invaded your home is strange sounds. They can get into any sort of narrow opening that is available to them. This means that they can be in your shed, attic or even your walls, so listen carefully.
· Raccoons aren’t overly careful and do not cover their tracks well. You might be able to follow footprints leading to the opening that they are using.
· There will be fur that has been shed or that has gotten snagged on something surrounding the area.
· Raccoon droppings are easily confused with that of a dog. If you do have dogs try and monitor where they are defecating to establish who is leaving the droppings.
· Opening in the façade of your home. It is essential to check whether there is anywhere that the raccoons can gain entry into your home. They will gnaw and scratch at any small opening in order to enlarge it. You will be able to hear them doing this. You will also be able to see where they have entered if you go in search of openings.

Sounds made by raccoons
It is crucial to identify the creature that is inhabiting your home. This will best prepare you to get rid of it. There are a variety of sounds that point to raccoons in your home.
· If you detect scratching sounds coming from wall cavities or the attic you might have raccoons nesting. They will also thump around while getting their new home ready.
· Raccoons are not friendly creatures and you might hear them fighting with each other to establish who gets to stay and who has to go. They also growl and hiss at each other.
· If there are baby raccoons present you will be able to hear them crying.
· Gnawing sounds made by the adults while they are chewing through your wooden beams.

Raccoons in your garden
If you have a deck outside, this might be an easier place for the raccoons to build a nest. They will not have to gain entry to your home but they are still in close proximity to all of the things that they need. Watch closely for garbage or food that has found its way to openings around your deck.

How to get rid of raccoons
Once you have established that you do indeed have raccoons, you can go about getting rid of them. The most convenient and safest way to accomplish this is by calling a wildlife removal specialist. They have the necessary knowledge and tools to accomplish the job. You can try doing it yourself but it can prove to be a difficult and costly job.
