The Austin Pigmy Rattlesnake

The Austin pigmy rattlesnake has a small body of about one to two feet long for the adult. The babies are recognized with their yellow tail. Their small body size made it difficult to see or even hear their sound while moving but their rattling which sounds like busy can easily be heard. These snakes are notorious for their nasty bite when feel threatened notwithstanding their small body size.



The appearance
Texas pigmy rattlesnakes can easily have variant color pattern according to their habitat. The color pattern may be in uniform patches or variety of blotches running through their entire body. They colors are also different from one to another and some possible colors are: green, black or blue. There may equally be several shades of red and brown.

Biology and life cycle
The prime mating season of this Austin pigmy rattlesnake is mostly in spring. Most of the female pigmy rattle snakes usually give birth within the month of August usually about 6 live baby snakes. On their life cycle, it is not really understandable about the length of time they usually live in the wild. But, while in captivity the pigmy rattlesnakes are known to live up to 20 years.

Habitat and diet
Burrows are mostly where Texas pigmy rattlesnakes like to live in, but do not make their own burrows rather live in the one abandoned by other animals such as tortoise, gophers and others. They are mostly found inside woodlands, mixed forest other places with litters of leaves. Sand hills and meshes are among the places this snake usually live. They can eat different kind of animals such as lizard, small mammals, small frogs and insects. To hunt the prey they usually lay ambush. This is among the most aggressive snakes, which usually strike with little provocations. The only thing is that they do not have high volume of venoms that can be threatening to human life.

The behavior
Even the smallest Austin pigmy rattle snakes can cause great danger to the victim. The babies as well as the adult usually get aggressive at provocations and strike without wasting time.
